Sports at Yester

Hi, I am Adder and I am going to tell you about all the sport that we do at school. On a Thursday we have P.E. (physical education) with Mrs. Jones. We do lots of different sports like hockey, gymnastics, social dance, football, cricket and many, many more. At the moment we are doing a block of social dance. I think it is quite good.
On a Friday we have sport with our teacher Mr. Devereux. So far this year we have done fitness and rugby. When we do fitness we do sit ups, press-ups, star jumps, relay races and more. At rugby we are learning how to perform three man scrums. It is good fun. I really enjoy it. What sports do you play at your school?

Famous Scots

There have been a lot of famous Scots who have made Scotland proud and a great country. Here are some: Mary Queen of Scotland who had her head chopped off, Rabbie Burns who is a famous Scottish poet, Robert the Bruce was a man who fought for Scotland and Chris Hoy who is a Scottish cyclist and won sports personality of year 2008. There are plenty more Scots but these are some.

Hello! My name is Lars Ivar Erta Bertasen.
I live in Tromsø.
I live in a red/brown house.
I have one dad, one mom and two sisters.
I like to play football in the summer and I like skiing and ice skating and digging snow caves in the winter.

Tromsø is a fun city, we can do many fun things like: Go shopping a lot of different stuff, go to a café (but that can be a little expensive) or a restaurant (very expensive), or visit Darklight, which is a laser game where you use a body suit and we shoot at each other.

When it’s Christmas I like to eat porridge and turkey. On New Years Eve we eat turkey, it’s a tradition.
For Christmas I wish for football shoes, an electric tooth brush, candy, money, a gift certificate on Swag and a TV.
On New Years Eve we used to buy rockets but now that stupid law makes it illegal to buy rockets. Sometimes we get guests from everywhere; I think this year we are going to have guests from Vietnam. They are my dad’s colleagues. I am going to Vietnam in May with my mom and my dad to visit them.

Karamell

My name is Karamell, I am 12 years old. I was born in July 1996. I like drawing and climbing. My parents are separated, so I live two places. In my family there is my mother, my stepfather, my father, my sister and soon a little brother.

Before Christmas we have a special calendar, where we count down to the 24th. Then it is Christmas and we get a stocking full of candy! When we celebrate Christmas in my family we eat good food and spend time with each other. We put a three in the middle of the living room, and we put a lot of stuff on it.

I like to ride snowmobile in the snow as well as sliding down the road on a sleigh. I like ice skating too. We get our Christmas presents on December 24th. I wish that I get clothes and movies. There is no Christmas without the snow! It is fun to have snowball fights.

Merry Christmas!

My family’s traditional way to celebrate Christmas is that we eat some porridge with an almond in. Then we go to my great-grandfather and we eat gingerbread and other Christmas cakes and cookies. For Christmas dinner we eat ribbe (pork rib) and pinnekjøtt (lamb cooked with wooden sticks in the pot). We open our gifts on the 24th of December in stead of the 25th. For Christmas I wish for clothes, music, money and movies just to mention something. When it’s Christmas here it’s really cold. It’s really much snow too. We use to have snowball fights and build snowmen.

Yesters Christmas Party

The Christmas party we are having is not going very well. We have no decorations, no pizzas, no music and altogether it could be a disaster.
But, help is at hand and we are making decorations, everyone is bringing in their own food, and everyone is dressing up. And finally, we must thank Robin Red Breast and Tartan Terror, who have brought in CD's.
So, it might not be that bad! Wow!
By Whisky!

OUR CHRISTMAS PARTY!!!!!!!

Today is our Christmas party and we are organising it but the class have hardly any Christmas decorations so we have to make lots of them. The party will start at 1.15 and finish at 3.15. We are meant to be in maths just now except we are doing things for the party. Some of the class are not in our set so they are doing maths and we are not.

Nessie

The Loch Ness Monster, otherwise known as Nessie, lives in Loch Ness. Loch Ness is a lake in the Highlands. Nessie is a myth, so some people don't believe in her, but we do! She is known to be a big, green, swimming dinosaur. She has big scales, a long neck and huge fins. People come from all around the world to see Nessie, but don't often get to.

Rehearsing, rehearsing...

All right! As most of us might have noticed, Christmas is not far away. 7A have been rehearsing for a church concert that the school will hold this Friday. As it's closing in on showtime, the tension is building. How will we do? But we look on the bright side of things: When the concert is over, so is this semester! I'm sure the concert will be a great success!

The little ones got crackers and party hats but there weren't enough for us! It was great fun! Do you have any special dinners at school?

Our Christmas Traditions

In Scotland we have lots of Christmas traditions. We have Christmas trees in our homes which we decorate with some nice things! Most people have a star or an angel on the top of the tree. We put our presents under the trees. Some people have roast turkey for their Christmas dinner. We have Santa. Do you have a Norwegian Santa? Our santa rides in a SLEGH! with flying reindeer pulling it. He goes down chimneys and puts presents in our stockings. We have many traditions, please tell us about your traditions! We wonder if some of our traditions are the same as yours?

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

Every year the P1 to 3 and P4 to 7 go to two different plays. This year P1 to 3 went to see Seeping Beauty and we are going to see the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe . Some of you may have heard about the Narnia books or even read them. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is a story about four children called Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy who stumble upon the magical world of Narnia. Narnia has been put under a spell that makes it winter forever. Sort of like the weather that you get in Norway. Anyway the spell was cast by an evil witch who made herself queen of Narnia. There is a legend in Narnia that one day two girls and two boys should come to Narnia through a wardrobe, defeat the witch and bring back Aslan. Aslan is a talking lion who is the son of the Emporer over the sea. He is the king of Narnia and everybody in the country wishes for him to come back. There is a great battle between the forces of the witch and Aslan's army. The witch is killed and the four children are crowned kings and queens of Narnia. They live in the magical country for many years (but its only been a few hours in their world) then they find the wardrobe again and go through into thier world. The story is really good and we're looking forward to going to see it.

Norwegian beavers

The British beaver became extinct 400 years ago when the last ones were hunted for their fur. Now the Scottish Wildlife Trust has decided to re-introduce the beaver into Scotland. Four beaver families have travelled to Scotland from Norway to be released into the wild. Some farmers are not happy about this, but other people are very pleased. The beavers are in quarantine just now, but when there 6 months is over they can start to build dams! They will be released in the area of Scotland called Argyll.

I hope these Norwegian beavers will soon feel at home in Scotland.

Scottish animals

Hi were tartan and stardust and were going to talk about Scotland’s animal’s. First of all, foxes. The foxes that live in Scotland burrow in hills or in forest. People hunt them to stop them from eating farm animals. Second the highland cow. Highland cows are big hairy cows with big horns and you can’t see their eyes because of their hair.

Weather

Hi,
We would like to tell you about our weather in Scotland. Two days ago we had our first layer of snow. It was very exciting, but probably rubbish compared to yours! We threw snowballs at each other and we made a mini snowman called, Sir Larry Humphrey Henderson McGregor. Unfortunately he was killed by an evil primary 6 boy. WE HAD A FUNERAL!!!

The next day (a.k.a. today) we wrote our names and drew pictures in the snow. It was great fun! Our snow still isn't great though, but it might turn great tomorrow!

Our Norwegian tree (almost!)

Gifford is about 20 miles from Scotland's captital city, Edinburgh. Every year Norway sends a Christmas tree to Edinburgh and it is set up on "The Mound," a hill in the centre of the city, near to Edinburgh Castle. The tree is sent by Norway as a thank you for the support Scotland gave during the Second World War. This is the 24th year Edinburgh has received the gift. The tree has always come from the Norwegian region of Hordaland. This year the tree came from an area of Scotland called Peebles, although Norway still paid for the tree. This was to reduce the carbon footprint of the tree. The Lord Provost of Edinburgh (a Scottish mayor) said: "This year Edinburgh will be having a green Christmas, so our friends in Hordaland are sourcing our famous Christmas gift locally." The tree has 1,800 lights on it. It looks lovely, doesn't it? A lot of our children will be going to Edinburgh to see the Christmas lights so they will be able to see the tree too.

We have arrived!

Now I have added everyone's pictures to the introductions. You can all see what the children in P7 at Yester look like.

Mr Devereux

Tartan kilts

Quite a lot of children in our P7 class wore tartan today, and you can see many of them wearing kilts. Mr Devereux played Scottish music when the children came in to the classroom at the start of the day.

Highland dancing

Nettle told you that she did Scottish highland dancing. Here she is wearing her traditional dancing costume for St Andrews Day.

Scottish music

Highlander, Tinkerbell and Adder played their violins in front of the whole school. The tune they played was Scotland the Brave. Actually, we though that they were very brave playing in front of the whole school. Our head teacher accompanied them on the piano.

Golden Time

This is a picture of our Scottish Golden Time. Children across the whole school chose the activity they went to. Here is Mr Devereux doing Scottish poems and stories with two pupils from P1, two from P2 and two from P7. Most of the other children in P7 went to Scottish games, Scottish quiz and designing tartan.

Our Scottish Flag

Here is the Scottish flag we made with the children wearing their school uniforms. Everyone is waving a Scottish flag (saltire) too. This is the playground at the front of the school. I climbed up a ladder on to the roof to take the photo. There was a lot of water on the roof which had turned to ice so I had to be very careful!
Mr Devereux

St Andrews Day

Today we are celebrating St Andrews day with an all school golden time with special Scottish activities. Usually golden time is a half hour of doing what we want in the classroom. Do you have golden time? Some of the activities we are doing today are : Designing tartan, listening to Scottish poems and stories, Scottish dancing and a special Scottish quiz. Today we are all wearing tartan. We are also all wearing white tops and blue jumpers because the WHOLE school are going to make the soltire (the Scottish flag) by all standing in a position which looks like the soltire.
We are going to have a GREAT time!

Winter poems and stories

P7 at Yester have enjoyed learning about the snow in Norway. I think they are very jealous. We have also been listening to stories of dark winter nights in Norway, stories of trolls and gods. Today we listened to a story about Thor's lost hammer.

Today we wrote poems about winter darkness. William Wallace enjoyed learning about trolls. He wrote his poem about trolls in the darkness. He used a lot of alliteration (repeating the same letter at the start of words). Alliterative poetry was very popular in Britain in Medieval times. How many examples of alliteration can you find? Here is his poem:

The trolls were trundling through the thick trench-like snow.

Harmlessly the snow glided through the thick trees like feather from the birds.

Everyone was in their warm cosy beds.

Winter was truly coming, the snow was coming fast.

It was pitch black but the trolls kept trundling through the thick trench-like snow.

Never had it been this cold and the snow so thick.

The trees were tricking the treacherous trolls tearfully tripping them up.

Everything outside was frozen from the fir on the trees to the grass on the ground.

Recklessly the trolls snatched the tiny toddlers in their beds and ate them for tea.

By William Wallace

Reading and writing

Hey! Robin Red breast here! In Scotland now, it’s heading towards winter but we have not had much snow. Have you? I’m wondering if any of you have heard of Jacqueline Wilson. She is my favourite writer! What writers do you know in Norway? I like writing and reading, and do any of you in Norway have favourite writers? I would like to know! At school my reading book is called The Secret Garden. Do you have reading groups in Gyllenborg Skole? In Norway do writers come and sign the books they write? Do you have any keen readers in your class? I am a VERY keen reader. Sorry I have so many questions!

St Andrews Day

Hi there Berry here

Tomorrow it is St. Andrews Day and we are allowed to wear tartan and I don’t know if everyone in the class will wear some tartan .
I can't wait till Christmas comes because I already know what I am getting so it is not a surprise. (any way got to dash.)

ST ANDREWS DAY

Hey, now it’s time to tell you guys some of our good old Scottish traditions.

Saturday is St. Andrews day! A day when we all wear tartan to celebrate one of our well known saints, St. Andrew.

Because we aren’t at school on Saturday we are all going to wear tartan tomorrow. Yay! That’s great because tartan is totally the fashion now as well. Yay!

By Thistle

Thistle, obviously likes tartan!!
She has really long, thin nails and plans to paint them tartan.
She is right now wondering if she has a tartan necklace.
OOOOOOHHH!!!

Do you have any great traditions Thistle could worry
about?

Tartan Terror!

Hello again! How are you today? We’ve only got a few weeks till the Christmas holidays and I’m looking forward to a couple of weeks of freedom. Were probably going to have absolutely rubbish snow (not like you). I really really like Christmas and I’m looking forward to putting up the tree. What’s Christmas like in Norway?

Food in Scotland

Hi! Its us again! Its The Human Nessie and Highland Cow. We were wondering what you eat in Norway? Scotland’s traditional food is haggis, neaps and tatties (haggis, turnips and potatoes). In Scotland we grow some of our food but simply can’t grow some things like bananas for example. It’s far too cold. We do grow wheat which is turned into flour and then bread and other things. We also grow most vegetables and some fruits. What foods do you grow in Norway?

Norwegian lesson

Hi there! Glad you liked our site, though I presume it didn't make much sense. The picture of the polar bear is taken at an arctic zoo/amusement centre here called "Polaria". There you can see real living seals! During the visit the pupils also watched a film about the climate changes and how it affects life above the Arctic Circle.

Now, regarding the Norwegian letter you were talking about: Actually we have three more letters in our alphabet than you have in yours. The last three letters in our alphabet are Æ (æ), Ø (ø), and Å (å).
The Æ is pronounced kind of like the A in the English word "barrier", or the OU in "sound". The Ø sounds like the O in "word" or the U in "much", while the Å resembles the O in"boring" or the A in "walk". We have separate keys for these letters on our keyboards in Norway. Sweden and Denmark also use these letters. Hope my explanation wasn't too complicated!

By the way; I thought I'd try a new colour as well, maybe silver works.

Wednesday, 26 November 2008

I have been looking at the Gyllenborg Skole website. It is very impressive with lots of photos. I like the picture of the polar bear. I hope he didn't eat anyone! I notice one of the letters you use looks like an o with a little circle above it. How do you say this sound? What key(s) on your computer do you press to make this appear on your screen? I got bored with using blue so I thought I would leave this post in red!

One of the ways we let parents know about all the things we are doing at Yester is by our own web page. I keep this up to date every week and put on photos of things were have been doing. We also have some PowerPoint presentations made by our children and some podcasts they have made too. If you want to have a look at our P7 web page click here or go to www.yester-school.org/ak.html We also have a section of the school's website called the P7 Zone. Here the children have worked in pairs to make their own web pages. There are 14 pages here for you to enjoy. The address is www.yester-school.org/j.html
